Oak Stable
A sensitive conversion of an existing Oak framed stable building located in the open countryside of North Norfolk.
A carefully considered proposal for the re-use and enhancement of an existing agricultural building to provide a Holiday dwelling. Perched on a hillside within the natural landscape of North Norfolk — it was clear from the outset that the windows would need to be carefully arranged to ensure that views and connection to the surroundings was maximised.
Process
Concept
The proposal was guided by the need to retain as much of the existing structure as possible and enhance the connection with the surrounding landscape. This project was a rare opportunity to design a project placed in an extremely secluded and nature abundant area of North Norfolk. All elements of the proposal were carefully considered to ensure that all alterations to the existing structure offered the largest amount of benefits in terms of light and views. The existing cantilevering roof form has been retained to provide a solar shelter.
Materials
The materials have been selected to relate to the existing building and to provide visual connection with the surrounding natural landscape. The roof is proposed as a metallic galvanised roof, contrasting with the natural vertical cladding proposed on the walls.
