Black Barn
'Black Barn' is a large scale extension and alteration project located in the undulating countryside of Essex.
Planning permission has been recently obtained and we are presently developing the technical design phase of the project. The large scale refurbishment and extension project has been primarily guided by the specific needs of the family and a want to connect with the historic agricultural setting.
Process
Concept
The site is located within open countryside, surrounded by wildlife and an existing orchard. The scheme focuses on the need to reconnect the dwelling with the surrounding agricultural setting and to provide the family much needed additional living space.
Material design
The materials have been selected to directly contrast with the existing dwelling. Reflecting the surrounding historic agricultural buildings the proposal is clad almost entirely in black painted timber boarding. The dark colour allows the proposal to appear recessive and subordinate to the main dwelling, whilst also creating a clear statement.
